I photographed Chad Smith, drummer from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, in late March 1994 for the December 1994 Modern Drummer Magazine cover story. Meeting with Chad at his house in Los Feliz, we agreed that we didn’t want to do a ‘conventional’ shoot, rather we wanted to explore some different ideas based on classic music photographs. Click the slides below to see some highlights.
Chad and I reviewed a variety of photographs for inspiration. William Claxton’s moody, smokey shot of the sax player was an inspiration along with the classic Dave Tough photograph taken by William Gottlieb. The classic Slingerland promotional shots of Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa we’re inspirational as well. Those raucous and frenetic drummers jazz drummers forced to hold particularly “square” poses – it seemed a great juxtaposition for the Chad and his reputation.
