I photographed Ginger Baker in late 1992 at his ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley – north east of Santa Barbara. We spent a few hours on the ranch, shooting some casual shots with Ginger and his horses, then photographing Ginger playing in his tiny garage studio, followed by some posed portraits. The sun was beginning to set, and the light was fantastic. We ventured out for one last round of pictures with his dogs as the sun set – those (along with the close up that was used to open the article) are among my favorites. The Modern Drummer assignment was the second time I photographed Ginger. I had the opportunity to photograph him 2 years before when he was visiting the Walt Tucker studio.
